"The Treasury" – A Sculpture by Mogens Møller in the Town Hall Garden
In the Town Hall Garden, sculptor Mogens Møller has created The Treasury. The title refers to a visible box encased in a massive granite stone. Through a glass window, visitors can peek inside and see a Venus figure and a one-kilogram gold bar. Gold is eternal, beautiful, and unchanging—but also a symbol of materialism. The goddess of love, Venus, is equally ambiguous. She gazes both at us and away from us, her breasts boldly exposed while she radiates chastity. She is in seductive motion, yet stands still. Venus guards the gold—and tempts us.
Access behind the granite stone is blocked by a metal grate and protected by a medieval morning star. The sculpture exudes overwhelming solidity, placed near the old jailhouse and behind the courthouse and town hall. For more context, see the section Buildings in Skive Town.
From a well beside the granite stone, a mist of water rises—perhaps a sacred spring, or perhaps the entire sculpture serves as a frame for an oracle. The sculpture was commissioned by Skive Municipality and funded by the Danish Arts Foundation in 1993.
