The island Fur

It’s no coincidence that Fur has been named Denmark’s Most Beautiful Island. Fur is a truly unique place that offers a clear glimpse into Denmark’s past through its visible layers of diatomite and ash.
Denmark’s Most Beautiful Island Fur is not only of national interest – it also holds international significance. The Danish Agency for Culture and Palaces has listed Fur’s diatomite landscapes among the Danish sites nominated for inclusion on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
The incredible diatomite landscapes on Fur were shaped during the last Ice Age, which ended 20,000 years ago. However, the diatomite itself is between 53 and 55 million years old. Within it are around 200 layers of ash, spewed out by ancient volcanoes along with steam, lava, and clouds of sulfuric acid. The diatomite holds astonishingly well-preserved fossils of fish, birds, insects, wood, and plants. You can go fossil hunting on your own or join a guided tour with one of the geologists from Fur Museum.
Fur is also home to a vibrant community of creative souls. The island boasts no fewer than 20 studios and workshops that welcome visitors. It’s a special experience to feel Fur’s atmosphere and spirit through its diverse artists – definitely worth a visit if your journey takes you near Fur.
