Sortehusene (The Black Houses)

Take a walk in the past

An annual rent of 2 kroner

On the south coast of Stige Island you can find "The Black Houses", a collection of small, DIY houses made of wood and recycled materials. The first houses were built at the beginning of the 19th century. From 1945 and until the area was reconstructed in 1967 the houses were inhabited all year round. Conditions were primitive - no running water, toilet facilities or electricity. The annual rent was 2 kroner. The inhabitants earned their money working at the shipyard, fishing and digging clam shells.
