An accessible island experience

When you stand at the ferry harbour in Snaptun, Eastern Jutland, you can clearly see Hjarnø across Horsens Fjord, as it's only 500 meters away. The ferry can therefore operate a shuttle service for the island's visitors and its little over 100 residents with a quick five-minute journey. Although the island is very close to the mainland, the relaxing and healing island atmosphere is immediately noticeable as soon as you step off the ferry.

Hjarnø is not a large island, and many choose to walk around and experience its attractions. It is possible to take your car on the ferry, but we actually recommend leaving it on the mainland, as Hjarnø is best experienced under the open sky.

A tour around Hjarnø

When you arrive on the island, it’s a good idea to head east from the harbor towards Hjarnø’s small church, which is Denmark’s second smallest. You are welcome to step inside the church, which, despite its small size, serves as its own parish.

From the church, you can follow the coastline and cross the seagull bridge out to Odden. Here, there is a lovely beach and a stunning view of Hjarnø Sund. From here, you can continue along the coast and cross the island through the charming little village.

If you’re visiting Hjarnø with children, it’s a great idea to try the Treasure Hunt around Hjarnø. On the treasure hunt, you’ll answer questions as you travel around the island. Once you’ve completed the whole journey, you’ll receive a medal as proof.

The Vikings' island

One of the main attractions on Hjarnø dates back to the Viking Age. Kalvestenene is a collection of 10 ship settings that served as burial sites for powerful men or women who once ruled Hjarnø and thus the entrance to Horsens Fjord. An old legend tells that Viking King Hjarne is buried right here.

In 2018, archaeologists discovered a large gold treasure on Hjarnø, which indicates that the island held special significance and that powerful people once lived here.
