  Nørreskoven Forest and Dyrehaven deer park, Vejle

  Nørreskoven Forest on the north side of Vejle Inlet is one of the most frequented forest in the area – one that invites you to enjoy many outdoor experiences. The very versatile piece of nature offers grave mounds, dried out springs and monuments. Nørreskoven is particularly well-known for the large beech trees from the early sixteenth century. Also enjoy a stroll in Dyrehaven (deer park). See the forest from above in the treetop climbing park, Gorilla Park Vejle, or challenge yourself to the forest trails by the sports college, Vejle Idrætshøjskole.
  
  The forest has an extensive hiking trail system.
  
  The Dyrehaven area
  Dyrehaven (deer park) stretches over a 30-hectare area in the south-eastern part of Nørreskoven. The motorway cuts through the heart of the woodland, but there is a passage between the two sections under the arches of the Vejle Bridge, where you can also admire this huge construction. It is possible to get very close to the 2 deer species fallow deer and bead. Please note: it is not allowed to feed the deer.

  Obstacle course, mountain bike trails and disc golf
  By Vejle Idrætshøjskole (sports college) in the north-eastern part of Nørreskoven there are mountain bike trails, obstacle courses (Skovbanen) and a disc golf course. There is access to the area from Nørremarksvej via Ørnebjergvej east of the college.
  
  The hilly woods of Nørreskov are ideal for mountain biking. The five-kilometre mountain bike trail is easy to use for all. The track is shaped like a figure eight and offers two difficulty levels. The hard track surface means that the trail can be used year-round regardless of weather conditions. The 600-meter obstacle course, built using forest materials, is somewhat more demanding. The area also has a disc golf course that can be booked through the college’s training centre.

  Tales from Nørreskoven
  Nørreskoven comprises the areas known as Forkobbel, Bagkobbel and Polakkerskoven.
   
  The former ski jumping hill is one of the curiosities of the Bagkobbel area. It was built during World War 2 in connection with the very cold winters. 
  
  Polakkerskoven got its name from some Polish mercenaries, who roamed the forest during the Swedish War in the years 1658-60. The citizens of the city captured the Polaks and built their skulls into the north gable of Saint Nicolai’s Church, where they are still seen.   
  
  Far into the seventeenth century, the holy spring of Helligkilden was visited by sick people on May 1 and on Midsummer Day.  In 1905, the spring was restored, but has since dried out.

  Gorilla Park Vejle

  The obstacle courses in Gorilla Park are of varying heights and difficulty and offer experiences for everyone regardless of physique or adventurous spirit. Here you can go treetop swinging like Tarzan and Jane for hours on end.

  Gorilla Park Vejle’s easiest course is only 1½ metres above ground, featuring small, easy obstacles. The level of difficulty then increases, which is reflected in the course number. The most challenging course is the Alpha course!

  Treetop climbing requires no special qualifications other than the desire to have fun and a fondness for outdoor activities in scenic surroundings.

  Gorilla Park Vejle uses the patented and award-winning SSB fall-stop snap-clip system. Before heading out on a climb you will receive expert safety and behavioural guidance by a qualified instructor. Then the jungle adventure is all yours.

  The options are many, including snowboarding, cycling and treetop Tarzan swinging through the forest. In total, Gorilla Park Vejle has over 2 km of obstacle courses, featuring more than 100 different climbing elements and several zip lines.

  Gorilla Park offers group instructions on the hour (last instruction four hours before closing) for a maximum of 30 people per group. It is therefore recommended that you book no later than 21:00 the day before your visit so you are sure of a place. Doing so will also grant you a discount.

  In 2018, the popular Gorilla Big Swing, re-opened! You are hoisted up to 15 meters after which you pull the pin that activates a free-fall before you glide onto the big swing.   Grejsdal Valley

  Grejsdal Valley is one of Denmark’s deepest and most magnificent valley surrounded by 50-70 meter forest-clad hillsides. The southern end of the one-kilometre valley river, which springs from the area around Fårup Lake, was originally the site of as many as 15 early industrial mills, two of which are still in operation as museum mills.

  The northern end of the river runs through a protected nature reserve with meadows and wetlands rich in birdlife.

  Unique to the Danish landscape, the area is rich in travertine rock used to build many of Denmark’s earliest stone churches, such as those in Hornstrup, Hover and Jelling.

  Many of the old industrial buildings have been preserved, and several of them have been turned into interesting new homes. These include Hammerværket and Wittrups Klædefabrik.

  There are several opportunities for hiking in the area, including along Grejsdalstien, which is a 16-kilometre hiking route between Vejle, Grejs and Jelling.

  The Vejle Bridge

  Towering above Vejle Inlet, the impressive Vejle Bridge connects Mølholm in the south with Nøremarken in the north. The Vejle Bridge can be experienced close-up from Dyrehaven (the deer park) in Nørreskoven or from Vejle Marina.

  Construction of the Vejle Bridge began in 1975, following fierce lobbying from local politicians and citizens in Vejle. In the past, traffic was routed through Vejle town itself along the old dual carriageway No. 10. Up through the 1960s and early 1970s, traffic became increasingly congested in the town centre. In 1974, the Danish parliament decided to construct a new motorway from Kolding to Vejle, which included the bridge over Vejle Inlet, and on 1 July 1980, the much-needed motorway bridge could be inaugurated. Price: DKK 350 million.

  There was some initial resistance to the project. It was feared that the bridge would become an eyesore in the beautiful natural landscape surrounding Vejle Inlet. The architects therefore chose to design the bridge in a very neutral style, so that the bridge was naturally suited to the wooded surroundings around Vejle Inlet.

  The bridge over Vejle Inlet is a classic example of a beam bridge, where the bridge deck rests on a number of pillars. In this case, the bridge deck rests on 15 pillars and each of the intermediate bridge sections has a length of 110 metres. The crossing height is 40 meters. The Vejle Bridge is 27.6 metres wide and has a total length of 1,712 metres, making it Denmark's sixth-longest bridge.

  Since the bridge opened, the traffic on the Vejle Bridge has increased so much that today the bridge is Denmark’s busiest motorway bridge. Figures from the Danish Road Directorate show that, on an average day, about 50,000 cars cross the bridge.

  The umbrellas of Vejle Midtpunkt

  Vejle Midtpunkt is located at the crossroads between Tønnesgade and Nørregade by the northern section of Vejle’s pedestrian street. The Midtpunkt area – combined with the upper section of Nørregade, Paladspassagen, Nørretorv and Vestergade – is also known as Vejle’s Latin Quarter. Within short distance, you will find an exciting mix of restaurants, cafés, bars, specialty boutiques, smørrebrød stores, groceries, a baker, chocolatier & pastry shop as well as residential homes.

  Vejle Windmill

  There has been a mill at the site since 1846, but the current building dates back to 1890, and its equipment is from the 1930s. The building served as a mill until 1960, and its impressive interior machinery gives a good impression of how the mill operated. The mill has contributed to an overall history of milling in Vejle, but has also been in focus in some contexts – for example, during the occupation of Vejle in 1864 or the two occasions when the mill burned, in 1890 and 1938. In the latest fire, only certain parts of the mill were affected, which is otherwise largely intact from 1890.

  Vejle Windmill is open during the summer season from April 1st until the end of the school autumn break in week 42 and can be visited during this period from Tuesday to Sunday from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

  The Jelling Monuments (UNESCO)

  The year is 965. Viking King Harald Bluetooth bids farewell to the Norse pantheon and embraces Christianity. He has this message chiselled into a large rune stone in the town of Jelling close to the rune stone erected a few years earlier by his father, King Gorm the Old. On the rune stone Harald boasts of having conquered Denmark and Norway and brought Christianity to the Danes. The inscription reads: “King Harald ordered this monument made in memory of Gorm, his father, and in memory of Thyrvé, his mother; that Harald who won for himself all of Denmark and Norway and made the Danes Christian.” The rune stone is considered Denmark’s baptism certificate and the figure of Christ inscribed on the stone is also featured in all Danish passports.

  Gorm the Old’s slightly smaller memorial stone to his Queen, Thyrvé, bears the inscription: “King Gorm made this monument in memory of Thyrvé, his wife, Denmark’s adornment.” This is the oldest reference to the name ‘Denmark’ and the rune stone is therefore referred to as Denmark’s name certificate.

  During his reign, King Harald Bluetooth also erected two large barrows and built a church on the site.
  
  Today, Harald’s magnificent Viking monuments are centrally located in the town of Jelling. You can enjoy views of the area from the top of the 10-metre barrows, which have a diameter of 70 meters. The northern barrow contained a wooden tomb, probably constructed by King Harald Bluetooth for his father, who was later re-entombed in the church. Today’s Jelling Church is a Romanesque masonry church, built around 1100 on the site of Harald Bluetooth’s original church from the 900s AD. In 2000, King Gorm the Old was reburied in the church’s burial chamber.

  From the top of the barrows you can see hundreds of newly erected white concrete pillars that encircle the entire site, marking the approximate location of the original wooden stockade. Walking along the footpath you can also see an outline representation of the 350-metre ship-shape as well as the positions of the so-called Trelleborg houses. And you can also marvel at the high-tech bronze and glass display cases that today encase the rune stones, which are located between the barrows. You can also enjoy a moment of reflection in the Jelling Church.

  The Jelling Monuments are considered Europe’s finest Viking Age monuments and they enjoy UNESCO World Heritage patronage.

The amazing Kongernes Jelling experience centre lets you explore the world of the Vikings and the exciting history of the Jelling Monuments in interactive exhibitions.   Bluetooth technology, used everywhere in mobile phones and computers for wireless communication, is named after the Danish king Harald Bluetooth due to his communicative skills in bringing warring factions together.

  Kongernes Jelling – home of the Viking kings

  Kongernes Jelling invites you on a journey through tales told with flickering flames to an age of Vikings and Valhalla warriors and the nation's transition to Christianity. Here you also learn about the Danish kings, from Gorm the Old to the present royal family. All told in a way that inspires children and adults alike with unique experiences.

  The two digital telescopes on the rooftop terrace overlooking the monument area allow you to zoom in on today's Jelling, but also to gain insight into Jelling through the ages.
  
  The experience centre is located just across from the large monument area where King Harald Bluetooth built a palisade structure that was the nation’s largest in the Viking Age. Here you also find the two Jelling rune stones, the Jelling Church and the two royal barrows. These monuments have been under UNESCO World Heritage patronage since 1994.

  Groups can by prior appointment book tours of the monument area with Danish, German or English-speaking guides.

  Givskud ZOO - ZOOTOPIA

  Visit GIVSKUD ZOO, which is only a 40-minute drive from Frederica.

  Here you will find plenty of space for both animals and visitors, so it is easy to enjoy a wildly good day. In GIVSKUD ZOO you drive on safari in your own car or in one of Givskuds safari buses.

  Get very close to the animals and experience giraffes, zebras, antelopes and lions cross the road right in front of you. You can take a walk in the zoo and meet many exciting animals, such as gorillas, elephants, giant otters, spectacled bears and many, many others.

  GIVSKUD ZOO also offers Denmark's largest dinosaur exhibition. Here you will find over 50 life-size dinosaurs, ranging from "long-necked" about 40 meters high to the "dangerous" Tyrannosaurus Rex. In June 2021, Denmark's largest facility with penguins will open. Through the glass pane you see the many active penguins swimming under water and from paths and platforms you experience them throwing themselves into the waves and waddling around on land.
