When you step into Maribo Cathedral, you gain a vivid insight into the site's historical significance and the medieval monastic tradition. Originally built in the 15th century as part of a double monastery, the church now stands as an important testament to Maribo’s history and cultural heritage.
After a thorough restoration in the 1890s, Maribo Cathedral today appears much as it did in the Middle Ages—a beautiful example of medieval monastic architecture.
Explore the Monastery Ruins
Outside the church, you can explore the monastery ruins, offering a glimpse into the lives of the medieval nuns. A stone paving marks where the monastery walls once stood for centuries, giving visitors a sense of the site's deep historical roots.
Leonora Christina and Maribo Monastery
King Christian IV’s daughter, Leonora Christina, lived at Maribo Monastery from 1685 to 1698. She was buried in the monastery church, but shortly after, her remains were removed. Her gravestone and the crypt containing her coffin can still be seen in Maribo Cathedral.
By the cathedral’s west gable, you will find a memorial stone erected in her honor.

The cathedral is open for visits every day from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
