Kolind church

A church with roots in the Middle Ages

In the heart of Kolind on Djursland lies Kolind Church – a newer church building from 1919 that continues the history and heritage of the original medieval church on the site. Here, modern church architecture and historical details come together in a peaceful and atmospheric setting.

From the Middle Ages to new construction

The original church in Kolind was built in the Romanesque style in the 12th century and stood for several hundred years as the ecclesiastical centre of the town. But by the beginning of the 20th century, it had become too small and was in poor condition, and a decision was made to build a new and larger church. Demolition began in 1915, and the current church was built and consecrated on Whit Monday 1919.

Architect M.B. Fritz designed the new church with respect for the original building. Several building parts and materials – such as ashlars, window frames and beamed ceilings – were reused and are now part of the church's structure.

A living church space

Kolind Church now serves as a parish church and has a bright and simple interior, characterised by both newer and older elements. The altarpiece and pulpit date from the Renaissance and were transferred from the old church. In 1956, the church was restored, and a colourful mosaic window was installed in the east, among other things.

The church is open to visitors during the day when there are no church services and invites contemplation, architectural interest and tranquillity in the middle of the town.
