Grenen Art Museum was founded by the artist Axel Lind, who purchased the house in 1977. The house was built in 1959 by the people of Skagen and served as a dance hall and restaurant until Axel Lind bought it.
Axel Lind was born in 1907. He grew up in Rådvad, the industrial area with the former knife factory, where the family lived in the old blacksmith shop. In his adult life, he lived for about 60 years in Sweden.
From 1977 to 2011, Grenen Art Museum was mainly decorated with Axel Lind's own seascapes. He personally maintained the museum, accompanied by staff, until his death in 2011, at nearly 104 years old.
The museum's approximately 600 sqm is now a great combination of Axel Lind's collection and contemporary art.
