Frøbjerg Bavnehøj
This section of the route offers great climbs – and equally thrilling descents – as you pass Funen’s highest point: Frøbjerg Bavnehøj.
Park your bike and enjoy the sweeping views across most of Funen. The hill is part of a characteristic dead-ice landscape.
Frøbjerg Bavnehøj rises 130 meters above sea level, making it the highest point on Funen. The hills are flat on top with steep sides and striking meltwater gorges. The name “Frøbjerg” comes from the Norse god of fertility, Freyr. In ancient times, Frøbjerg was a sacred site where sacrificial feasts were held.
In times of war, bonfires (bavner) were lit on hilltops across the country as a means of communication, and Frøbjerg Bavnehøj was one of these signal hills.
Several memorial stones have been erected in the area, commemorating women’s suffrage, the Reunification, the abolition of serfdom, and the 150th anniversary of the Danish Constitution.
At the foot of Frøbjerg Bavnehøj, the old icehouse hosts a small summer exhibition telling the story of the hill.
