A Palace Built on Peace and Distinguished Architecture
Fredensborg Palace was inaugurated in 1722 as a pleasure retreat for King Frederik IV and his consort, Queen Anne Sophie. The name was chosen to commemorate the end of the Great Northern War. The palace was designed by some of the most prominent architects of the 18th century and stands today as a cohesive example of Baroque architecture.

The palace is one of the royal family’s preferred residences and often serves as the venue for state visits and royal events. Numerous heads of state have visited the palace, and tradition dictates that they leave behind a diamond-engraved signature in one of the windowpanes. The palace also hosts family celebrations such as weddings and birthdays.

The palace garden is one of Denmark’s largest historic gardens. It is known for its seven radiating avenues that fan out from the palace in a semicircle. In the same park, experience the precision of the Baroque and the wild beauty of Romanticism—from symmetrical paths to forest areas with winding trails. The garden is open to the public all year round.
The Valley of the Norsemen
The Valley of the Norsemen is a unique part of the garden – a sculpture park with 70 figures of Norwegian and Faroese farmers and fishermen. This remarkable monument reflects a time when the king's realm was considerably larger.
The Reserved Garden – A Glimpse into Royal Garden Life
The Reserved Garden, the royal family’s private garden behind the main palace, is normally closed to the public. However, during the height of summer, guided tours are offered through both the garden and the palace's chambers. Here, visitors can see the herb garden, a modern orangery, and gain a unique insight into royal life.
