Clausholm Castle

Baroque architecture and cultural history

A Baroque experience in a class of its own

Clausholm Castle was built at the end of the 17th century and is today one of the country's finest examples of Baroque architecture. The castle is known for its symmetrical layout, its 14 painted stucco ceilings and elegant interiors, which tell stories of aristocratic life and aesthetics from a bygone era.

Royal love and drama

One of the most striking stories is linked to King Frederik IV and Anna Sophie Reventlow. The king abducted Anna Sophie from Clausholm, and she later became Queen of Denmark. Their dramatic love story is inextricably linked to the castle – and is part of the atmosphere that guests can feel during a tour.

Castle chapel and unique details

The castle chapel is a particular highlight – it houses one of Denmark's oldest preserved organs. Several of the rooms in the main building were decorated by leading artists and architects of the time and offer a unique insight into the style and way of life of the 18th century.

Discover the Baroque garden

The large Baroque garden surrounding the castle is a living piece of cultural heritage. Discover the straight avenues, fountains and canals that create a peaceful and majestic setting for the castle. The garden is open to visitors during the summer months, when you can enjoy a peaceful walk or find the perfect photo opportunity. Guided tours and special events During the summer months, Clausholm Castle opens its doors for guided tours. Here, enthusiastic guides share stories about the architecture, history and life at the castle. Throughout the year, special events are also held, such as a Christmas market and activities for families with children.

Christian Alexander Berner is now the sixth generation to live at Clausholm Castle.
