Assens Miniby (city) in the heart of Assens
The first project of the miniature town was the small cookhouse on the harbor pier, built according to the original drawings and therefore an exact replica.
The history of a miniature city
The concept of a miniature town emerged around 1966.
Varde was the first to initiate such a project. Today, several miniature town projects have started across the country. It is often said that without knowledge of the past, there is no future, and this is where miniature town projects gain their value as storytellers of history.
Assens Miniature Town was intended to be an exact replica of the old houses located within the historic city gates, representing the years around 1890 – 1900. Since its inception in 1990, more than 100 houses have been built in Assens Miniature Town. The work takes place in the "mini masons’" workshop, where about a dozen retirees have, over the years, created small houses in a 1:10 scale, accurate down to the smallest detail.
Building techniques
Everything is handmade. Bricks, roof tiles, and ridge tiles are made from red clay.
After an appropriate drying period, the bricks are fired in a dedicated kiln at approximately 1000 degrees Celsius. Doors and windows are crafted from plastic sheets that are machine-milled.
The internal framework is made of artificial plates that withstand frost and do not absorb water. Once the houses are fully built and completely dried, they are plastered, and some are painted.
Afterward, doors, windows, and sometimes gates are installed. Steps and iron railings are also added to ensure everything appears as an authentic replica.
Current major project: Construction of Vor Frue Church
In 2016, it became clear that an Assens Miniature Town could not exist without the city's prominent Vor Frue Church, which is Funen’s second-largest church after St. Canute’s Cathedral in Odense. This project is still in progress and is expected to be completed around 2020. In a 1:10 scale, the church will stand 4.5 meters tall and will be built as an exact replica using mini monk bricks produced in our own workshop.
