Anholt Lighthouse

Anholt Lighthouse – a landmark in the middle of the Kattegat

Anholt Lighthouse is more than just a lighthouse – it tells a story of navigation, isolated island life and dramatic nature in the middle of the Kattegat. The lighthouse, which is one of Denmark's oldest, was built in 1788 and has guided sailors safely through the waters for more than 200 years.

History and significance

The lighthouse was built as an important part of shipping in the Kattegat, where currents and low tides can make sailing dangerous. Originally, it was manned by lighthouse keepers, but today it is automated. The 42-metre-high tower is still active and serves as an important part of the Danish Coast Guard.

Views and nature

The area around the lighthouse offers rugged, beautiful nature and a rare feeling of standing alone in the middle of the sea. Here you will find dunes, marram grass and sea views as far as the eye can see. From the lighthouse, you can see the whole of Anholt and the surrounding Kattegat – on clear days you can even glimpse the coast of Jutland.

The lighthouse as an experience

You cannot climb the tower, but the area around the lighthouse is accessible on foot and offers photo opportunities and tranquillity. It is an obvious destination for a hike on Anholt, for example as the end of a trip through the Ørkenen – Northern Europe's largest lowland heath.

Practical information

The lighthouse is located on the easternmost tip of Anholt and can only be reached on foot or by bicycle from Anholt Harbour. There is no drinking water or rubbish bins at the tower, and no paved or drivable road leading there. The trip through the desert is approximately 7 km.

Therefore, always remember to wear good, practical footwear, bring water and possibly a small packed lunch and sun protection. And always make sure to clean up after yourself and take everything back with you.

You are welcome to bring your dog, but remember to take all waste back with you.
