The mainland island in the Fjord
Alrø is a relatively large island located at the entrance to Horsens Fjord, home to 150 residents. The island is not far from the mainland on the northern side of the fjord, and a causeway has been built, making it easy to visit the island. You can arrive by car, on foot, or by bike without needing to take a ferry. Most of the island’s buildings are concentrated around the main road, Alrøvej, which stretches 7 kilometers from the causeway in the north to the southern tip of the island, where there is a small ferry harbor. The journey along Alrøvej is quite idyllic with its many charming old houses, offering a nice view of the nature and coastline. Along the way, you will pass restaurants, galleries, and a few shops.
The beautiful nature
Alrø is a rather flat island, with its highest point only 14 meters above sea level. The island is designated as a protected EU habitat area and an EU bird protection area, and it is home to a large population of birds from a variety of species. The island is generally quite cultivated, which adds to its rural charm and open landscape.
It is not possible to walk all the way around the island along the coastline, but the best opportunity to experience the coastline is at the southern tip, where you can take a short walk along the beach and enjoy the view of the fjord and the neighboring islands of Hjarnø and Vorsø.
The journey through Alrø is part of several different hiking and cycling routes, most notably the hiking route around Horsens Fjord, Fjordminoen, and the corresponding cycling route around the fjord.
Famous restaurants
Alrø is well known for its dining establishments, and many people visit the island just to enjoy a meal. Café Alrø became nationally famous for its giant tartlets, which have since been copied in many places across Denmark. At Alrø Købmandsgaard, you can try a bison burger or bison tapas, made with local bison from a nearby farm.
Visit two islands on one trip
At the southern tip of the island, there is a small ferry harbor. During the summer months, a small bicycle ferry runs between Alrø and the neighboring island of Hjarnø. It is possible to plan a day trip to visit both of the islands in Horsens Fjord, and the journey on the small ferry is both pleasant and scenic.
