In 1890, 102 co-operative members with 700 cows built Humble Dairy, which was popularly known as the ‘Butter Castle’ due to the building's original facade. In 1932, the facade was remodelled to the current one.
The property to the left of the dairy in 40B served as a residence for the dairy manager.
In 1979, the dairy merged with Bøstrup Andelsmejeri, which in 1983 joined Mejeriselskabet Danmark (later MD Foods, today Arla). In 1984, the dairy in Humble closed, while the dairy in Bøstrup continued until 1990, as the last dairy on Langeland.
After the dairy closed in 1984, the building was converted into a laundry (with continued sales of the famous Humble Cheese). Today, the building is used as a warehouse.
Humble Cheese
The dairy was recognised for the special Humble Ost cheese made by the bacterial flora at the dairy and the use of double rennet addition.
Today, the cheese is produced on Funen, but still according to the over 100-year-old recipe. The cheese can be purchased at Ostehuset Rudkøbing
