A historic castle in scenic surroundings
Valdemar's Castle is idyllically located on the island of Tåsinge, surrounded by forest, beach and rich wildlife. The castle was originally built by Christian IV and has since been owned by the Danish naval hero Niels Juel. Today, it is Denmark's largest private home – and the only former royal castle in private hands.
The beautiful surroundings can be enjoyed on foot via public paths that wind through the forest and along the coast.
A new gathering place for art
In 2025, Valdemar's Castle will be the setting for an ambitious art season, where the castle's own historical portraits by Carl Gustaf Pilo and Jens Juel will meet contemporary, site-specific works by artists such as Rong Bao (CN), Jirí Georg Dokoupil (CZ), Hanne Lippard (NO) and Pernille With Madsen (DK).
The first exhibitions of the year will be marked by performances by Rong Bao and Hanne Lippard, kicking off a season filled with art and experiences.
Contemporary art in the castle's halls and rooms
The exhibition at Valdemar's Castle transforms the historic setting into a sensory journey through the many expressions of contemporary art. Jiří Georg Dokoupil's iconic soap bubble paintings and new glass sculptures spread across the castle's first floor and chapel, where his sculptural furniture in the entrance hall also invites guests to become part of the work. In the Riding Hall, Pernille With Madsen challenges our senses with a three-part work that combines film, miniature sketches and archaeological layers in an installation where the viewer must bend their gaze to follow the action. Hanne Lippard transforms the entrance tunnel into a resonant air tube with a reverberating hiccup and creates a soundscape in the vaulted barn that mirrors the history and form of the building. Rong Bao lets childlike play meet social commentary in The New Pontiff, 2025 – a colourful and ambiguous sculpture in the Tekanden that asks the question: Who or what do we believe in in a world characterised by fragility and change?
Experiences all summer long
From May to September 2025, visitors can experience an interdisciplinary programme of exhibitions, performances and events that breathe new life into the historic castle. Valdemar's Castle will become a unique meeting place between the past and the present, where both history buffs and art lovers will find inspiration.
