Experience art in new ways with the Museum of Contemporary Art
The Museum of Contemporary Art in Roskilde invites you to explore the many forms of contemporary art. Here you will encounter art in urban spaces, at festivals, in nature and in historic buildings – always with a focus on sound, performance, video and digital formats.
The museum emerged in the 1980s following the Festival of Fantastics, when experimental art filled Roskilde. Since then, it has worked to present contemporary art in new settings and without fixed walls. Today, you can experience major exhibitions, events and digital worlds.
Exhibitions at Sankt Hans
Just outside Roskilde, you can explore the scenic surroundings of the former psychiatric hospital, Sankt Hans. Here the museum presents exhibitions until 2026. You can discover everything from installations in the old laundry building to artworks in Sct. Hans Garden, where nature itself becomes part of the exhibition.
Past and upcoming experiences
You can follow an art trail through historic buildings, encounter works exploring dreams and sleep, or visit exhibitions addressing the human relationship with nature. In autumn 2025, you can also experience Kaåårååline’s Vers in the Kurhus – a unique exhibition featuring works by Karoline Ebbesen (1852–1936) in dialogue with Danish and international contemporary artists.
Contemporary art without walls
The museum has no permanent address but instead brings art to where you are. You can encounter exhibitions at Roskilde Festival, in urban spaces, in schools and online. In this way, contemporary art becomes both present and constantly changing.
Virtual sculptures
Explore a digital collection of sculptures that you can freely discover and download. Each year, a new virtual sculpture is created, examining how art can exist within digital communities.
Podcast and sound art
You can also listen to new sound works via Podcast for Contemporary Art. Here you will find both experimental audio projects by contemporary artists and historical works from the museum’s extensive sound art collection.
About the museum
The Museum of Contemporary Art is the only museum in Denmark dedicated exclusively to contemporary art. Here you can experience sound, performance and video art, as well as new art forms that challenge and expand the boundaries of what art can be. The museum collaborates closely with artists both in Denmark and internationally, and over the years it has presented works by leading names such as Lea Porsager, Kirsten Astrup and Esben Weile Kjær.
