Galleri Sulegården – A Beautiful Blend of Old and New
Just 2 km outside Assens, in Lundager, you’ll find Galleri Sulegården – an ideal stop if it’s open.
Here you can experience contemporary art by both Danish and international artists, with five changing exhibitions throughout the year. In addition, there are two permanent exhibitions: the Miniature Exhibition featuring small works by 30–40 artists, and the December Exhibition with PABiAK (Professional Artists in Assens Municipality). Alongside the exhibitions, the gallery hosts various artistic events and offers a wide selection of graphic works.
The History of Sulegården
Galleri Sulegården was founded in September 1991 by artist Carl Henning Aarsø, who also has his studio next door. The old “Sulegaarden Grimstrup” dates back to 1554 and is likely Denmark’s oldest sulegaard. “Sule” is an old term for pillar or post, referring to the building’s construction, where a row of pillars runs through the center of the house, connected by a long horizontal timber (aasen) supporting the roof structure. This technique dates back to ancient times, and today only a few sulegaarde remain in Denmark.
The combination of historic architecture and modern art is a living example of how old and new can complement each other beautifully.
