St. Catharinæ Church and Abbey, founded in 1228 as an abbey for mendicants friars of the Dominican order.
A visit to the abbey and the church is a special experience, guaranteed to soothe the mind. During the Reformation in 1536, a total of 14 Catholic churches, monastic buildings and chapels were demolished in Ribe and their property appropriated by the king. Only St. Catherine’s church and the Cathedral escaped demolition, the abbey became the town’s first public hospital.
Access to church and yard only when services are not in progress.
