Step back in time to “the good old days”

In the heart of Roskilde’s historic town centre, you'll find Lützhøft's Grocer’s House – a living time capsule where you can step straight into everyday life of the 1920s. The atmosphere is rich with history, nostalgia, and the scent of old-fashioned goods.

The historic grocer's shop

The shop first opened in 1892 and operated as a general store until 1979. Today, it serves as a living museum, preserved exactly as a Danish grocer’s would have looked 100 years ago. Shelves are brimming with original goods, tins, spices, and small items from a time before supermarkets existed. Behind the counter, volunteer “shopkeepers” are ready to share stories about the products, prices, and daily life back then.

Behind the shop, you’ll find the old courtyard workshops, where traditional craftspeople such as blacksmiths, cobblers, saddlers, and rope makers demonstrate their skills and keep old techniques alive. It offers a unique glimpse into a time when craftmanship was an integral part of local life.

Next door is the Butcher’s Museum – a fully preserved butcher's shop from 1922. Here you can explore original fittings, the office, the sausage kitchen, and even taste homemade salami made using old recipes.

A hidden gem in the Grain Store

Upstairs in the old grain store of the Grocer’s House, you’ll discover the Crafts Museum – a true treasure trove of historical tools and stories about traditional Danish craftsmanship.

Delve into an impressive collection of tools used by past generations of woodworkers – from large lathes to the clogmaker’s humble carving bench. Each tool tells a story of diligence, precision, and pride in one’s trade.

An experience for the whole family

Lützhøft's Grocer’s House is a place for both children and adults. Younger visitors can experience how life was “when granddad was a boy”, while adults often recognise goods and stories from their own childhoods or that of their parents. It’s a place for learning and enjoyment – ideal for families, school groups, and anyone interested in history.

Entry to the Grocer’s House is free

Everyone is welcome to drop in, soak up the atmosphere and be transported by the stories of the past. Each year, special events and activities for all ages bring even more life to the house.

Accessible parking is available in the courtyard, along with step-free access to the shop and toilet facilities.
