In the middle of western Himmerland, Vindblæs, Oudrup, Ajstrup, and Lundby heaths are merging into a natural unit without disturbing elements such as houses, poles, and power lines. There is only heather, sheep, cattle, and scattered trees.
The 1300 hectares are a remnant of the vast heathland that, until the 19th century, covered a large part of the region between Løgstør, Nibe, Farsø, and Aars, stretching all the way towards Svenstrup, Støvring, and Rold Skov.
A walk across the heath reveals an impressive wealth of blooming plants and low bushes. Heather covers large areas and forms a reddish-purple carpet over the hills in late summer. Where the heather gives way to grasses and herbs, you will see a multitude of colorful flowers during the summer.
Hiking Trails in the moors of Himmerland
There are many different hiking trails in the moors. So no matter the time or your experience level, there’s something for everyone. Below are four recommended hiking routes by Frie Fodspor.
The purple route is 4.5 km and takes you through the beautiful Vindblæs Heath. Along this trail, you’ll pass the site where the Skarpsalling Vessel was found—an important artifact from the Stone Age.
The green route is 5 km and connects the purple route at Vindblæs Heath to the red route near Lundby. You’ll walk with Rønhøj and the Oudrup Plantation on one side and Oudrup Østerhede on the other.
The red route is 8 km and forms a loop through Lundby Heath.
The blue route is 8 km and loops through Ajstrup Heath.
It’s also possible to combine the loops for a longer hike. The heaths consist of grass and footpaths, so it's important to wear good walking shoes that can handle a bit of water.
