Lejre was a centre of power for more than 500 years during the Viking Age and early Iron Age. The area is known as the home of the legendary Skjoldung dynasty – Denmark’s first kings – and is mentioned in the heroic epic Beowulf. The museum tells their story through local archaeological finds and immersive exhibitions that bring the past to life.
The World of the Legendary Kings
According to legend, the royal hall of the Skjoldung kings stood just outside where the museum is located today. Mythical rulers such as Rolf Krake and Frode Fredegod – descendants of King Skjold – are said to have reigned here. Archaeological discoveries in Gl. Lejre support the story of one of Denmark’s earliest and most significant seats of power.
What You Can Experience
The exhibition is divided into three themes. You’ll first encounter written sources and archaeological traces, presented with light, sound and film. Then, explore the landscape around the museum yourself using a digital map that reveals excavation sites and ancient monuments.
Odin and the Skeleton in the Royal Hall
Finally, you’ll step inside a reconstructed royal hall and discover the museum’s unique artefacts – all uncovered in the local area. These include everyday items such as cups and children’s toys, as well as major finds like the world-famous Odin figure, Denmark’s largest silver hoard – the Mannerup Treasure – and the story of “The Skeleton in the Royal Hall”.
