Ledreborg Palace Park
Take a walk in the past
Explore the impressive newly renovated park of Ledreborg Palace - a beatiful piece of nature and culture.
The palace and the park of approx. 10 acre is one of the most complete cultural sceneries in Denmark. The palace itself is a characteristic Rococo building while the park, landscaped in Baroque style around 1740, was later changed into a more scenic romantic park. Every year the park is visited by a large number of visitors - not least in connection with the annual Lifestyle Fair and the popular concerts in the park in August.
A few years ago a detailed architectural plan for the landscape was completed and used as the basis for the restoration principle of the park. There were three main purposes of the restoration: To recreate and emphasise the Baroque trails of historic value to the park; to create an artistic renewal by recovering "the spirit of the place"; and finally to accommodate the park to nowadays' financial situation, use and maintainance.
The renovation of the park also encompassed a recreation of the terraces on the slopes, the fountains and a pond as well as restoration of the many sandstone statues. Furthermore, the renovation has entailed a number of practical installations in preparation of the many arrangements in the park including the concerts.
On the slope opposite the palace - below the middle terrace - a basin was constructed like a cave in the slope with a back wall of large graite blocks. From the central granite block of almost 4 meter a waterfall cascades into the basin. Basin and waterfall are designed by the artist Erik Heide. On the terrace opposite the waterfall there is a tall sculpture - also designed by Erik Heide - covering the Adam & Eva statue in winter.
The flowering peonies in June are worth a visit themselves. The bottom of the park holds a lovely picnic area where you can enjoy your own picnic or a take away from Restaurant Herthadalen.
The park is open the whole year - only closed in the third weekend of August due to concerts.
The palace is open for prebooked tours in the period 1st of May - 30th of September.
Special guided tours on request from 1st May to 30th September. Please call +45 46 48 00 38 or Lejre Roskilde Tourist Office at +45 46 31 65 65.
