Melstedgård Agricultural Museum

At the fine, old Melstedgård you will be introduced to life in the past, while the new Madkulturhus gives you an insight into today's food world.

Melstedgård Agricultural Museum – for the whole family

Melstedgård is a really exciting open-air and agricultural museum for the whole family just outside Gudhjem. Melstedgård can be traced back to the beginning of the 17th century and is today run by the Bornholm Museum. At Melstedgård there is plenty of fun for all ages!

The farmhouse

The farmhouse at Melstedgård was demolished around 1796, when a new and more modern house was built. The house still stands today and there is always something exciting going on here, mustard is shaken with a cannonball, rye bread is baked and pretzels are cooked in the kitchen and in the living room people are crocheting, weaving and doing crafts. Around the farmhouse you can see different stripes of colors on the doors, window frames, door frames and beams, which are the colors that have been in the house. Several of the old doors, which are from before the farmhouse was rebuilt, are today placed between some of the rooms by the kitchen and the community room. The wallpapers are copies of old wallpapers that were found on the walls of the house.

The barns and stables

In the barns at Melstedgård you will find old agricultural tools and exhibitions about Bornholm agricultural life, and in the stables you will find all the “real” animals, which can of course be petted.

The garden

The garden at Melstedgård looks as it did around 1900. Before that time, the road to Melsted went right past the farmhouse, and there was no room for a garden. It was also not until the 1860s that it became common to have a large ornamental garden, which was just supposed to look nice and not be useful. An herb or vegetable garden had been around for a long time before the ornamental garden.

In the Skafferiet you can have a light lunch, enjoy coffee and cake or buy locally produced goods to take home.
