Eight thousand tons of peat were extracted during World War I and fifty thousand tons during World War II.
Hundsemyre is one of the island?s best bird bogs. Access is totally prohibited during the nesting period from May 15 to July 15.
Information about the birds is found on information boards by a bird-watching tower south of the bog. The tower affords a fine view of the area. Hundsemyre is a designated conservation area to preserve the wetland, woodland, reedbeds, meadows and undergrowth as a valuable habitation for the insect and animal life and to provide a sanotuary for the birds in the area.
