The area has an exciting natural and cultural history. Originally, Gjern Bakker was covered in dense forest, but over time it was cut down for firewood and construction. Heather then took over and only a few pockets of the original oak forest - such as the beautiful oak thickets on the slopes - remain.
Due to the sandy soil and steeply sloping terrain, the area has never been cultivated on a large scale. As early as 1893, locals proposed that the Hedeselskabet should plant the area and protect its special nature because ‘due to its uncommon natural beauty, it deserves a better fate.’
Great activities
Today, Gjern Bakker invites nature lovers, hikers and families to enjoy the area. The highest point, Åshøj, reaches 104 metres above sea level, and from the top you have a breathtaking view of the hills and the varied landscape. Don't miss a hike to Store Troldhøj, where you can enjoy panoramic views of Gjern Å, the beautiful river valley and the particularly valuable oak scrub that surrounds the hill.
