Den udprægede sydøst-nordvestlige orientering af landskabet synes at afspejle bevægelsesmønstret af de yngste isstrømme over Ærø (17-19.000 år før nu).

Overfladen af Skjoldnæs-halvøen er præget af småkuperet dødis-topografi. Store dele af kysterne (især sydkysten) udgøres af klinter med aflejringer fra sidste mellemistid Eem og sidste istid Weichsel.

Næbbet er udgøres af strandenge og flere rækker markante strandvolde, hvis stenmateriale tidligere blev udnyttet som råstoffer. Disse ralgrave ligger nu hen som ”strandsøer”.
