Det kan dreje sig om en smeltevandsdal eller en del af en tunneldal skabt under isen.

I 1688 blev området inddæmmet og kunstigt tørlagt. I dag har naturgenopretning skabt den nuværende sø, Vitsø Nor. Syd for Vitsø Nor ligger en interessant kystklint med aflejringer fra næstsidste og sidste istid (Saale og Weichsel), samt sidste mellemistid Eem.
