Geologisk set hænger ådalen sammen med det dalsystem, der sandsynligvis blev skabt som tunneldale. Tunneldale opstår ved, at smeltevand under en gletcher, med højt tryk skyller gennem landskabet. De dybeste dele af tunneldalene rummer i dag søerne ved Sørup, Hvidkilde, Nielstrup og Ollerup.

En del af smeltevandet gravede sig ned i landskabet og skabte Syltemade Ådal med de nuværende enge og vådområder. Gennem tiden har Syltemade Å drevet flere vandmøller, hvoraf kun tre er bevaret i dag.
