In the heart of the village of Gl. Lejre lies the Old Royal Farm – a historic tenant farm that has belonged to the same family since the 18th century. The old half-timbered house has served as both home and living museum, preserved with original furnishings and details that tell stories of rural life, traditions, and family heritage.
A Glimpse into the Past
As you step inside, you'll encounter sturdy oak posts and building details typical of 18th-century craftsmanship. You can see the folk parlour with long bench and grandfather clock, the kitchen with bread oven and hearth, as well as the original sleeping and utility rooms. Each room reflects the era and the lives once lived within its walls.
The Garden and Surroundings
The old garden surrounding the house is carefully designed and lovingly maintained by a volunteer gardening group. Rare and historic plants such as fritillaries, peonies, poet’s daffodils and roses bloom here, alongside medieval medicinal herbs like henbane and pink columbine. Take a walk along Klintebakken, down to the stream and the old bleaching meadow, where linen was once laid out to whiten in the sun.
The garden is always open to visitors. The farm is open from June to August on Thursdays and Sundays from 1 to 4 pm.
