Experience the Fyrkat Ring Fortress

Fyrkat is one of Denmark’s five Viking ring fortresses, built during the reign of Harald Bluetooth. The fortress has an inner diameter of 120 meters and was constructed with precise geometry. Within the ramparts, four identical quadrants each held four identical houses arranged around a square courtyard, now marked with stones. The ramparts themselves are still clearly visible in the landscape, and nearby stands a full-scale reconstructed longhouse – offering a sensory impression of Viking architecture and everyday life within the fortress walls.

Fyrkat was excavated in the 1950s, and close to the fortress, archaeologists discovered a burial ground with 30 graves – including a remarkable woman’s grave. The buried woman was equipped with unique jewelry and objects suggesting she was a völva – a sorceress from the old Norse pagan tradition. Her grave tells the story of Denmark at a turning point, when Harald Bluetooth turned his back on the old Norse gods and converted to Christianity.

Meet the Völva at Fyrkat Møllegård

In a newly renovated wing at Fyrkat Møllegård – just a few hundred meters from the ring fortress – you’ll find the museum’s exhibition. Here, you can meet the völva and see selected artifacts from the spectacular grave.

The exhibition combines modern scenography and effects with archaeological objects, offering a visual and sensory introduction to Viking Age culture and power. It was a time when strong fortifications were essential – and when the king united the realm with both words and the sword.

The Chieftain’s farm – immerse yourself in viking life

At the Chieftain’s Farm, you’ll find nine reconstructed houses made of oak timber with clay-plastered walls and thatched roofs. Here, history comes to life in your hands.

The farm buzzes with activity during the summer months, as interpreters and volunteers dressed in Viking costumes bring the past to life. Try on Viking clothing, bake flatbread over an open fire, work with wool, watch the blacksmith at work – or test your skills in archery. There are many activities, which vary from day to day.

Right next to the farm, you’ll also find the Mythological Playground – a fantastic place for children to play and explore.
