Detour: Helnæs – A Natural Gem with Bobakker, Burial Mounds and Galgebakke
If you love unspoiled nature, endless beaches, fishing, and authentic local charm, take a detour to Helnæs. Head towards Brydegård and Brunshuse, then cross the causeway to this beautiful peninsula in southwest Funen.
On your way to Helnæs, you can stop by Denmark’s Fishing Lodge, Gl. Avernæs Sinatur Hotel, Gl. Brydegaard, or Agger Vin & Parkgolf for a meal or a refill – check opening hours first.
Just across the causeway lies Bobakkerne – a massive ridge covered in colorful flowers during summer. Bobakkerne even featured in the Danish Christmas TV series Tinka, where scenes with the Tower of Solitude were filmed. Today, all filming structures are gone, so finding the exact spot is a little adventure.
Take a break from the saddle and walk the 2 km trail through Bobakkerne – the views are postcard-perfect year-round. If you have the energy, climb Helnæs’ highest point, Galgebakke (29 m), along the route. At the Bobakker parking area, you’ll find toilets and picnic tables.
Helnæs has been inhabited since the Stone Age, and five burial mounds south of Maden west of Helnæs town still dominate the landscape. The peninsula offered easy access to food from land and sea and protection from enemies. Helnæs was first mentioned in 1231 as “Hælghænæs,” meaning “holy headland.”

The entire peninsula once belonged to Hagenskov Manor. Today, after state acquisition, the grazed areas are open for hiking.
