The golden dress, the dandelions and the message of peace
At Skovsbovej 22 stands Kunsttårn 7 – shining in gold. Here, visual artist Jonna Pedersen has created the work ‘Sammenhold’ (Togetherness), a powerful and sensual work of art that unites history, femininity and a message of peace in one symbolic expression.
A queen in the tower
The work is inspired by Queen Margrete I, who united Denmark, Norway and Sweden under one crown in 1397. Jonna Pedersen has chosen this historical figure as the bearer of the message of peace and connectedness – a longing that is just as relevant today as it was 600 years ago.
At the centre of the artwork is a golden dress – not a copy, but a reinterpretation of Margrete I's iconic dress, which today only exists in replica form. The dress is set against a background of dandelions – a humble but stubborn plant that symbolises vitality and hope. Together, the dress and the dandelion become a double symbol of dignity and survival.
Symbols, skirts and the rustle of fabric
The golden gown measures 2.4 metres and was created with great precision to fit into the narrow, high space of the tower – without losing its impressive appearance. The air circulation in the tower causes the gown's skirts to move slightly, creating an almost lifelike experience.
The work also includes golden shoes – not historically accurate, but added by the artist as a creative liberty. A linoleum cut, inspired by the queen's death mask in Roskilde Cathedral, adds further depth, as does a modern version of a coat of arms with contemporary symbols of unity.
An artist with a message
Jonna Pedersen lives and works in Rødovre, where she shares a studio and artistic life with her husband, the artist Bjørn Eriksen. She has a degree in business administration but changed direction after a period of stress and made her debut in 2005 at the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition.
Today, she has exhibited in Denmark, New York, Berlin and Amsterdam.
Childhood holidays at Emmerbølle Strandcamping on Langeland have given her a strong bond with the island – and were one of the reasons she accepted the commission as artist for Kunsttårn 7.
From fairy tale to reality
Before the Queen became the centre of attention, Jonna Pedersen toyed with the idea of Rapunzel's braid – a rope, a lifeline, a rescue. Today, the braided rope is part of the work, both as a visual element and as a symbol of connectedness – and as a tribute to female strength and resilience.
