    Krabben

    0.64 km

Krabben (“The Crab”) at Slettestrand started as a fun project, which has now become a landmark on the beach.

Krabben is a 2.5 meter high, black iron sculpture of a crab in attack position. It was set up at April the 4th in 1981 by Erik Nielsen, a jack of all trades from Frederikshavn.

Krabben is a replica of a real crab in the ratio: 1:25.

According to Erik Nielsen the idea started for fun when he had a new welder to trial. But when the work took shape, he worked eagerly, and ended up with a replica of the eight-legged sea creature with big claws. According to Erik Nielsen the sculpture fits perfect for the sea  at Slettestrand which is harsh - exactly like Krabben.

Visitors can follow the restoration and the new construction of the boats, which are made by professional boat builders and related apprentices at the boatyard.

Its members use the boats for cruising, leisure and fishing, diving and teaching. The project ensures and developing boatbuilding art and navigation art to the benefit of the anglers. The boat constructions functions as a conventional business and services include the fishing fleet at Thorup Strand.

    Hjortdal Kirke

    1.89 km

The church was built in the Middle Ages

In a region struck by sand drift, and which, over the latest century, has been bound by marram grass and plantations, the Church at Hjortdal is situated - solitarily and almost hidden in plantations with spruce and pines.

The impressive building consists of Romanesque choir and nave with a very low late Gothic tower towards west and a porch from 1586 towards north. The Romanesque building, choir and nave have been plotted very carefully and built of granite ashlars on a diagonal plinth partly covered by earth and some places faintly hollowed.

    Svinklov Klitplantage

    2.98 km

Svinklov Dune Plantation (in Danish: Svinkløv Klitplantage) is a 700 hectar large state-owned area that is open to the general public. The shallow part towards south was up until the Middle Ages an open strait connecting the North Sea to the Limfjord.

The breathtaking scenic view from the top of Svinklovene is both beautiful and historic. The was once an open strait just south of the ranges of hills. The strait "Sløjen" and a passage lead merchant navies and viking ships back and forth between the Limfjord and the North Sea. The stretch was monitored from the viking castle Aggersborg, and it was functional until at the 13th century. The area around Svinklov Dune Plantation was originally the north-western part of a large island in the Stone Age Sea.

Svinklov Dune Plantation is more than 100 years old and stands as a very diverse conifer plantation providing good cover and hence fine living conditions for animals, birds and insects. Roe deer is quite common, and for the patient there are good possibilities to see red deer. The whole flat area, with its small lakes, was actually one big ocean in the Stone Age, more than 50 metres the level of where you see the plantation today. Back then, the water level was six metres higher than that of today. Svinklov Dune Plantation has been appointed internationally worthy of preservation - an EU habitat.
