Joakim Skovgaard was the artist who created the frescoes in Viborg Cathedral.
The museum is located in the old town hall, a baroque building from 1728, right next to Viborg Cathedral.
Paintings from the Golden Age of Danish art in the 19th century may be seen along with turn of the century ceramics and early examples of Danish design.

In 1060, Viborg gained the status of a cathedral city, but it was not until 1133 that the church was completed with its four towers, side aisles, choir, and crypt. Unfortunately, the church has been struck by fires on several occasions, most recently in 1726, which left only the walls and crypt.
Therefore, the crypt is the oldest part of the cathedral, taking you back nearly 900 years in time. In the small crypt chapel stands a coffin with leather covering, containing the embalmed nobleman Valdemar Daa. Hans Christian Andersen himself has written a well-known tale about Valdemar Daa in "The Wind Tells of Valdemar Daa and his Daughters."
Viborg, as a city of royal homage, has paid homage to at least 37 monarchs. Among them, Erik Klipping found his final resting place in the cathedral when unknown assailants murdered him in 1286. It happened with 56 stab wounds in Finderup, just outside the city. Under a stone in front of the altar lies a lead casket with symbolic remnants.
As the church stands today, it is from 1876. After the fire in 1726, it was quickly rebuilt, but the work was not done properly. Therefore, it was closed in 1862 and completed 14 years later, with the original style and layout preserved.
Many authentic details testify to the church's long history, such as the two lions and two faces on the exterior granite of the choir. Cobblestones in the churchyard indicate the location of the old church's additions.
From 1901 to 1906, Joakim Skovgaard and his assistants painted the cathedral's famous picture Bible. Using wet plaster, they worked magic with their lime colors, and the frescoes speak a language that everyone can understand.
Next to the church is the Skovgaard Museum, which exhibits works created by the Skovgaard family of artists.

In 1018, Canute the Great came to the manor and craft stalls at Søndersø and had gold coins minted. Viborg quickly developed into a central centre of power, where the king held county councils and court meetings and the church held religious festivals.
In 1027, Hardeknud became the first king to be honoured at the Viborg Parliament, and in 1060 Viborg became a bishopric. As the town grew in importance, a cathedral, 12 parish churches and 3 monasteries were built within the ramparts, which King Sweyn had built in 1151.
In connection with the church's religious celebrations, the city held market days to emphasise the festivities. These markets quickly became well known and attracted people from near and far.
Throughout the Middle Ages, for 650 years, Viborg remained an important city for both the king and the church. The city's history is characterised by royal and religious events that have left their mark on Viborg's cultural heritage.
Viborg Gråbrødre Monastery's buildings as they stand today are the remains of a large building complex containing two monastery courtyards, a church and various smaller outbuildings. The east wing with the King's Chamber and the "basement church" dates from the 16th century.
Since 1949, Gråbrødre Abbey Church has been housed in the vaulted basement under the current main wing.
The church is closed, but visits can be arranged by appointment in connection with a booked guided city walk.

The construction of Viborg Miniature Town began with the houses on Sct. Mogens Street, stretching from Sct. Mathias Street to Reberbanen and the adjacent side streets. There are also areas that reflect Nytorv and Latinerhaven, and even space for the Cathedral and Greyfriars Monastery Church.
Viborg city was founded in the vicinity of Viborg Cathedral. Here, you will find traces that extend more than 1,000 years into Danish history, and the city's name, meaning "Sanctuary on the Mountain," has its roots here.
After the Lutheran influence of the reformer Hans Tausen and the separation from the Catholic Church in 1536, many churches and monasteries were dismantled. Several of the houses in Viborg Miniature Town are actually constructed from recycled materials from these demolished churches and monasteries.
The construction of Viborg Miniature Town also carries the legacy of the rebuilding following the major city fire in 1726, which devastated large parts of the city. Each individual building component is carefully crafted by dedicated miniature builders using specially designed tools and machines.

Dollerup Bakker lies on the edge of the ice margin that separates flat West Jutland from hilly East Jutland, which was formed around 17,000 years ago during the last ice age. There are therefore large differences in altitude in the area. The highest point in the area is 63 metres above sea level and from here there is a magnificent view of the southern and eastern parts of Hald Lake.
Dollerup Bakker is a great place to visit and ideal for hiking in the hilly landscape. Dollerup Ishus is also located in the area and there is ample parking in the car park on Ravnsbjergvej.
