    Krudttårnet (Powder Tower)

    0.37 km

After the Scanian War (1676-1679), the Gunpowder Tower was expanded. Originally, the tower was located 270 meters further east but was relocated in the 1970s due to shipyard expansions. The relocation of the 4,500-ton tower was executed in one piece, with the structure reinforced with concrete rings. Using hydraulic jacks, it was pulled and pushed to its current location, where it has stood since 1975.

    Historical Significance
During the Great Northern War (1709-1720), the building served as a support point for the Danish navy. Today, the Gunpowder Tower is a museum housing gunpowder, bullets, and stories about Fladstrand and naval history. On the top floor, visitors can see the unique roof construction as well as displayed cannons.

    Activities and Experiences
In the summer, the area around the Gunpowder Tower transforms into a historical town focused on Tordenskiold and Fladstrand (now Frederikshavn). Here, fun activities and games for children are offered, along with inspiration and relaxation for the whole family. An entrance wristband, purchased at the entrance to “Tordenskiold's Town,” provides access to all activities and visits inside the Gunpowder Tower.

    Cultural Events
Throughout the year, the Gunpowder Tower hosts various cultural events, including theater concerts, dining events, lecture days, and exhibitions. Additionally, the Gunpowder Tower can be rented for special occasions such as civil weddings. At the entrance, visitors are greeted by staff dressed in historical costumes from the Support Association Tordenskioldsdage 1717, who can share insights about the tower’s history, its relocation in the 1970s, and the maritime history of the harbor, navy, Tordenskiold, and Fladstrand.

    Kystmuseet Bangsbo Fort

    3.6 km

The fort was built by the Germans during 2. In 1944, it was armed with four 15 cm cannons from the artillery ship Niels Juel.
In total, 69 concrete structures were cast at the fort - large and small.

Frederikshavn has often played a role in connection with wars, and for example, the Pikkerbakkerne hills were almost hollowed out during 2. World War II. In the Niels Juel Cannons area, there are many bunkers and you can see cannons from the frigate Niels Juel. The area is normally a military area, and from here the Kattegat Marine District controls all water surveillance in the northern Kattegat.

During the summer, the area is accessible by Niels Juel's guns and guided tours are available at set times. Visit the exhibition bunkers and experience interactive interpretation. There is a cinema, traditional museum education, interactive education and a children's bunker with education aimed at the youngest visitors.

Guided tour - You can take a tour of the open bunkers and the terrain. You can read more about when there are guided tours here

Enjoy a unique experience in this magnificent area, where the sky is high and the view of the Kattegat is stunning. In clear weather you can see both Skagen and Læsø.

    Parking at Bangsbo Fort
As Bangsbo Fort is located in a military area, entry is prohibited for unauthorized persons. However, museum guests are welcome to drive right into the area and park at the museum building.

If you are not a guest of the museum or MOCN, please use the parking lots on the edge of the area. From here you are welcome to walk in the area. Visits for groups and school classes are possible by appointment.

Ticket - You can buy a day ticket for one museum or a weekly ticket valid for 7 days, as well as for the three other museum departments: Kystmuseet in Sæby, Bangsbo and Skagen. The museum has varying opening hours - check the current opening hours on the Coastal Museum's own website.

    Lighthouse Hirsholm

    7.46 km

Hirsholm Lighthouse was built at a time when the island's population was around 200. Due to the large population at the time, a relatively large church was constructed right next to the lighthouse. The island had a vibrant local community that largely depended on the work provided by the lighthouse. In 1996, the lighthouse lamp was automated, which ended local employment as the need for staff disappeared. This led to the last permanent residents leaving the island, and the lighthouse thus became a symbol of a bygone era.

    Hirsholm's Original Lighthouse
Although the settlement has ceased, Hirsholm still attracts many visitors each year. Today, the island and the surrounding islands are a protected scientific nature reserve, providing shelter to a rich birdlife that attracts many ornithologists. The old lighthouse from 1838 can still be visited and now serves as a lookout tower. The Hirsholm Islands are a popular destination for those wishing to experience the island's natural beauty and unique history. Transportation to the Hirsholm Islands is via Seadog, which sails from Frederikshavn several times a week, making it easy for visitors to explore this scenic area.

Den Tilsandede Kirke - The sand buried church

    30.83 km

In the dunes west of Skagen stands the tower of the old Sct. Laurentius Church, today known as ‘The Sand buried Church’. For four hundred years it gathered the congregation, until drifting sand started to block the road and cemetery, and in 1795 the congregation were forced to cease worship, and the church was closed.

Sct. Laurentius was a magnificent church with impressive furnishings, of which now only the altar's two heavy candlesticks remain. They stand on the altar of the 'new' church, Skagen church. Beneath the surface there is still remnants of the church's foundation and floor, as well as a baptismal font that was not - like the rest of the furniture - removed and sold.

Recent studies around the 200th anniversary of the church's closure have helped mark the church's floor plan, including the location of the nave and sacristy, which can be seen behind the tower. Red poles mark the ground plan, while fascines mark the known parts of the old cemetery wall. Many questions are still unanswered, which probably is part of the fascination of the church.

Laurentius (Saint Lawrence) is the patron saint of this and many other west Danish churches. He was the protector of the sailors and the poor and suffered martyrdom on a gridiron. The gridiron can be found in Skagen city coat of arms together with the words " Vort håb til Gud alene/ Our hope to God alone"

In the summer Skagen Church arranges outdoor service every Thursday evening at 19.30 from mid-June to mid-August at the Sanded Church with wind music.

400 m from the sand buried church there is a parking lot with a playground, tables, benches and toilets - and during the summer you will find a kiosk, from which tickets are sold to get into the church tower.

    Skagens Museum

    32.21 km

It began here. Young artists travelled to Skagen, got lost in the motifs, created groundbreaking art across art forms, lived in a fascinating and lifelong community and founded Skagens Museum. It's all still here, spread across three museums and scattered throughout the city.

Skagens Museum houses the world's largest collection of the works of the Skagen painters. Anchers Hus was the home where the artist couple Anna and Michael Ancher lived, worked and gathered their artist friends. Drachmann's House was the oasis where the painter and poet Holger Drachmann found inspiration and peace.

In Skagen, you can experience exactly that historical heritage in the centre of a city that lives, works and works in the present.

The artist colony in Skagen was established after Holger Drachmann's first visit to Skagen in 1872. He was fascinated by the frugal, hard-working lives of the local fishermen and their families, and by the vast expanses that surrounded the small, enterprising fishing town. Drachmann's fascination spread to a group of young artists who saw the possibility of finding new motifs that would help them break away from their masters: the Golden Age painters. Because the new generation of artists wanted something different. They wanted to find their own feet. In this way, one of Scandinavia's most famous and recognised artist colonies gradually emerged with names like Michael and Anna Ancher, P.S. Krøyer, Laurits Tuxen, Holger Drachmann, Carl Locher, Thorvald Bindesbøll, Ulrik Plesner, Christian Krohg and Oscar Björck.

Skagens Museum celebrates the contrasts in the history on which the museum is based: The history of the artistic community that sprouted in Skagen from the 1870s. The community of painters, poets, designers, writers, musicians and actors were pioneers in their own time, but posterity has categorised the painters in particular as nice and uncontroversial. Skagens Museum addresses the paradoxes and works between history and the present with a perspective for the future.
