Nørreskoven Forest and Dyrehaven deer park, Vejle

    1.08 km

The nature and history of Nørreskoven Forest

Nørreskoven Forest on the north side of Vejle Inlet is one of the most frequented forest in the area – one that invites you to enjoy many outdoor experiences. The very versatile piece of nature offers grave mounds, dried out springs and monuments. Nørreskoven is particularly well-known for the large beech trees from the early sixteenth century. Also enjoy a stroll in Dyrehaven (deer park). See the forest from above in the treetop climbing park, Gorilla Park Vejle, or challenge yourself to the forest trails by the sports college, Vejle Idrætshøjskole.

Nørreskoven comprises the areas known as Forkobbel, Bagkobbel and Polakkerskoven.

The former ski jumping hill is one of the curiosities of the Bagkobbel area. It was built during World War 2 in connection with the very cold winters.

Polakkerskoven got its name from some Polish mercenaries, who roamed the forest during the Swedish War in the years 1658-60. The citizens of the city captured the Poles and built their skulls into the north gable of Saint Nicolai’s Church, where they are still seen.

Far into the seventeenth century, the holy spring of Helligkilden was visited by sick people on May 1 and on Midsummer Day.  In 1905, the spring was restored, but has since dried out.

What can you experience in Nørreskoven Forest?

    • The Dyrehaven area
Dyrehaven (deer park) stretches over a 30-hectare area in the south-eastern part of Nørreskoven. The motorway cuts through the heart of the woodland, but there is a passage between the two sections under the arches of the Vejle Bridge, where you can also admire this huge construction. It is possible to get very close to the 2 deer species fallow deer and bead. Please note: it is not allowed to feed the deer.
    • Obstacle course, mountain bike trails and disc golf
At Vejle Idrætshøjskole (sports school) in the northeastern part of Nørreskoven, there are mountain bike trails, an obstacle course, and a disc golf course. The area is accessible from Nørremarksvej via Ørnebjergvej east of the school.
The very hilly Nørreskov is ideal for mountain biking, and on the five-kilometer established mountain bike trail, everyone can participate. The trail is shaped like a figure-eight with two different difficulty levels. The surface is firm, so the trail can be ridden year-round, regardless of weather conditions.
The challenging 600-meter-long OCR obstacle course (OCR stands for obstacle course race) with 15 different exercise tools is built from the forest's materials.
In the area, there is also a disc golf course, which can be booked through the sports school's course center.
    • Gorilla Park Vejle
Gorilla Park Vejle offers obstacles of varying difficulty levels. Everyone can try out the more than 100 climbing elements between trees and treetops. Read more about Gorilla Park Vejle via this link: Gorilla Park Vejle (visitvejle.com)

    Grejsdal Valley

    2.5 km

Grejsdal Valley is one of Denmark’s deepest and most magnificent valley surrounded by 50-70 meter forest-clad hillsides. The southern end of the one-kilometre valley river, which springs from the area around Fårup Lake, was originally the site of as many as 15 early industrial mills, two of which are still in operation as museum mills.

The northern end of the river runs through a protected nature reserve with meadows and wetlands rich in birdlife.

Unique to the Danish landscape, the area is rich in travertine rock used to build many of Denmark’s earliest stone churches, such as those in Hornstrup, Hover and Jelling.

Many of the old industrial buildings have been preserved, and several of them have been turned into interesting new homes. These include Hammerværket and Wittrups Klædefabrik.

There are several opportunities for hiking in the area, including along Grejsdalstien, which is a 16-kilometre hiking route between Vejle, Grejs and Jelling.

    The Vejle Bridge

    2.5 km

Towering above Vejle Inlet, the impressive Vejle Bridge connects Mølholm in the south with Nørremarken in the north. The Vejle Bridge can be experienced close-up from Dyrehaven (the deer park) in Nørreskoven or from Vejle Marina.

Construction of the Vejle Bridge began in 1975, following fierce lobbying from local politicians and citizens in Vejle. In the past, traffic was routed through Vejle town itself along the old dual carriageway No. 10. Up through the 1960s and early 1970s, traffic became increasingly congested in the town centre. In 1974, the Danish parliament decided to construct a new motorway from Kolding to Vejle, which included the bridge over Vejle Inlet, and on 1 July 1980, the much-needed motorway bridge could be inaugurated. Price: DKK 350 million.

There was some initial resistance to the project. It was feared that the bridge would become an eyesore in the beautiful natural landscape surrounding Vejle Inlet. The architects therefore chose to design the bridge in a very neutral style, so that the bridge was naturally suited to the wooded surroundings around Vejle Inlet.

The bridge over Vejle Inlet is a classic example of a beam bridge, where the bridge deck rests on a number of pillars. In this case, the bridge deck rests on 15 pillars and each of the intermediate bridge sections has a length of 110 metres. The crossing height is 40 meters. The Vejle Bridge is 27.6 metres wide and has a total length of 1,712 metres, making it Denmark's sixth-longest bridge.

Since the bridge opened, the traffic on the Vejle Bridge has increased so much that today the bridge is Denmark’s busiest motorway bridge. Figures from the Danish Road Directorate show that, on an average day, about 50,000 cars cross the bridge.

    Vejle Windmill

    3.65 km

There has been a mill at the site since 1846, but the current building dates back to 1890, and its equipment is from the 1930s. The building served as a mill until 1960, and its impressive interior machinery gives a good impression of how the mill operated. The mill has contributed to an overall history of milling in Vejle, but has also been in focus in some contexts – for example, during the occupation of Vejle in 1864 or the two occasions when the mill burned, in 1890 and 1938. In the latest fire, only certain parts of the mill were affected, which is otherwise largely intact from 1890.

Vejle Windmill is open during the summer season from April 1st until the end of the school autumn break in week 42 and can be visited during this period from Tuesday to Sunday from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Vejle Windmill also houses the Vejle Kunstforening (Vejle Art Society). It is possible to visit the mill outside the season when Vejle Kunstforening is open. Learn more about their opening hours and current exhibitions at vejlekunstforeningmoellen.dk (only in Danish).

    The Jelling Monuments (UNESCO)

    10.2 km

The year is 965. Viking King Harald Bluetooth says goodbye to the Norse gods and yes to the Christian God. He had this event engraved on a large runestone in Jelling, near the stone his father, Gorm the Old, erected a few years earlier. On the stone, Harald boasts that he won Denmark and Norway and made the Danes Christian: “King Harald raised this monument after Gorm, his father, and Thyrvé, his mother, Harald who won all of Denmark and Norway and made the Danes Christian.” The runestone is considered Denmark’s baptismal certificate, and the Christ figure from the stone can be found in all Danish passports.

Gorm the Old’s slightly smaller memorial stone for Queen Thyrvé bears the inscription: "King Gorm made this memorial for his wife Thyrvé, Denmark's adornment." It is the oldest evidence of the name Denmark, and the runestone is therefore called Denmark’s name certificate.

During his reign, Harald also had two mighty mounds and a massive enclosure, called the Palisade, erected at the site.

    UNESCO World Heritage

Today, Harald's magnificent Viking complex has a central location in the town center of Jelling. From the top of the mounds, which are about 10 meters high and have a diameter of 70 meters, you have a good view of the monument area. The northern mound had a wooden-built burial chamber, presumably erected by Harald Bluetooth for his father, who was later reburied at the site where Jelling Church stands today. Today's Jelling Church is a Romanesque stone church, built around 1050-1100, and is built on top of Harald Bluetooth's presumed longhouse from the 10th century. In 2000, Gorm the Old was reburied under the church where he was found in 1978.

In the distance, hundreds of newly erected white concrete posts surround the entire complex and mark the approximate location of the Palisade. From the path, you can experience the interpretation of the 356-meter-long ship setting as well as the placement of the so-called Trelleborg houses. The palisade has been part of the World Heritage site in Jelling since 2018.

In the middle of the mounds, you can be captivated by the runestones in their beautiful high-tech bronze and glass showcases or find reflection in the church.

The Jelling monuments are considered the finest in Europe from the Viking Age and are on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Viking Market and the Experience Center Kongernes Jelling

Every year in July, you can find your inner Viking when the Viking market is held at the monuments. In the beautiful experience center, Kongernes Jelling, the Vikings' life and the exciting history of the monuments unfold in interactive exhibitions. Through digital binoculars on the rooftop terrace, you can see how Jelling looked 1000 years ago.

    Bluetooth Technology

The Bluetooth technology used everywhere in mobile phones and computers for wireless communication is named after the Danish king, Harald Bluetooth, due to his ability to create new connections and unite different entities.

Kongernes Jelling – home of the Viking kings

    10.32 km

The experience center Kongernes Jelling is located in the large Monument Area, which Harald Bluetooth enclosed with a palisade - the largest single construction of the Viking Age. Within the palisade stand the two runestones, the church, the ship setting, and the two mounds. The entire area is on the UNESCO World Heritage list and is worth preserving for future generations. The modern Monument Area is an impressive sight. White tiles and posts mark in the landscape what has disappeared, putting the stones and mounds in perspective. It is an ideal place to stretch your legs and get a sense of the area's grandeur - and perhaps try your hand at a Viking duel.

At Kongernes Jelling, the whole family can delve into the runes on Harald's Jelling Stone, explore Denmark's line of kings from Gorm the Old to the present day, and learn more about the life and daily routines of the Vikings. We tell the story of the Viking kings' quest for power, their mighty constructions, and Denmark's transition to Christianity. The exhibition is designed to provide a unique experience for both curious children and adults.

From May 1, 2024, admission will be charged at Kongernes Jelling. 120 DKK per ticket. Free for all under 18. An annual pass costs 175 DKK.

There are also additional family activities available both outdoors and indoors.

Throughout the year, guided tours of the monument area or lectures in our hall can be booked. Guided tours are offered in English, German, and Dutch - and of course in Danish.

Check the Kongernes Jelling website for special exhibitions, events, and activities during school holidays and more.
