Hammershus

    2.98 km

The largest castle ruin in Northern Europe
Experience the largest castle ruin in Northern Europe and the most popular attraction on Bornholm – a place to fire the imagination and bring the history of Bornholm to life. The oldest part of the fortress was probably built in the early 12th century to consolidate control of the island by the Archbishop of Lund (which was then part of Denmark), which he had acquired through a treaty with King Svend III Grathe of Denmark.

Quite new research and excavations from 2015 however seem to prove the fact, that the castle first was ready around the year 1300, and should have been built by Jens Grand – archbishop in Lund from 1289-1302.

For the next 500 years Hammershus was the stronghold of the island’s various rulers. Hammershus was rebuilt and extended on several occasions.

    Hammershus is handed back
Until the mid-15th century, Crown and church fought. Bornholm remained an important pawn in the game, with the king taking Hammershus, and with it control of Bornholm, several times. Every time, though, the island was handed back to the archiepiscopal see, for the last time by King Valdemar IV Atterdag in 1362. This time, however, the bishop recognised the right of the Crown to demand the return of Hammershus when the king so wished. But it was not until 1522 that King Christian II exercised this right and asked for the castle to be handed back.

    Leonora Christina and Corfitz Ulfeldt
In 1660-61 Danish King Christian IV’s daughter, Leonora Christina, and her husband, Corfitz Ulfeldt, were imprisoned in the castle for treason. A dramatic escape down the walls and cliffs failed.

    Hammershus – the old fortress
Hammershus retained its role of defending Bornholm right up until the end of the 17th century, when the defence of Denmark’s easternmost territory passed to the defences on Christiansø and at Rønne. In 1743 Hammershus was finally abandoned as a stronghold and the people of Bornholm were free to gather building materials from the site until 1822, when the ruins were put on the national historic register.

    Hammershus Visitor Center
Experience Hammershus in a new way from the visitor center at Hammershus. From the visitor center you can see Hammershus in a panoramic view. The visitor center also has a fascinating exhibition where you can read the incredible history of the castle ruin. Read more about the visitor center here.

    No climbing on the walls
Please note, that Hammershus is an old castle ruin. But even though the ruin is restored, you are not allowed to climb or walk on the walls.

    Salomon's Chapel

    3.16 km

Visit Salomon's Chapel (Salomons Kapel) on a hiking tour along Hammerknuden and see the place, where the large medieval herring markets were held.

Salomon's Chapel is a small chapel, which was built in the 13th century for the many herring fishermen, who brought their catch to the small natural harbours along the shore. You'll pass Salomons Chapel on your hiking tour along Hammerknudens coastline.

Northwest of the Chapel was a well, which was named Salomon's well. The water from this well, the people said, made you healthy. And especially around Skt. Hans (midsummer), people came to the well. Several historic sources say, that people stopped doing that around the time of the reformation - and also the importance of Salomons Chapel became less and less as the the herring swarms disappeared.

Ols kirke - Olsker round church

    4.35 km

At 28 metres, Olsker Round Church is the tallest of the round churches on Bornholm and the most elegant seen from the outside.

Olsker Round Church was built around 1150

Olsker Round Church was built around 1150, but has been rebuilt and reinforced several times, most recently in the mid-20th century, when the altarpiece was among the things replaced.

Olsker Round Church had originally a flat roof

If you climb the steep stairs, you'll soon understand why it was impossible for invading enemies to capture the church in Olsker. There are nine foxholes and the top of the wall clearly formed part of the parapet that surrounded the original flat roof of the church.

The round church in Olsker has about 25,000 visitors

The round church in Olsker receives about 25,000 visitors every year. The church is open to visitors when there is no divine service and you can obtain more information from the staff in the church porch. There are public toilets and limited parking.

    Jon's Chapel

    6.98 km

    Jons Kapel på Bornholm
Jons Kapel is a dry cave in the freestanding cliff Jons Kirke (Jon’s Church). You’ll find the formation close to the former restaurant/café Gines Minde.

    Jon wanted to christian Bornholm
The legend says that the monk Jon came to the island to christian Bornholm. He was said to live in the cave and the islanders came down to him in order to see, who he was and to hear, what he had to say. Jon preached God’s word from the bible and more and more liked, what he was telling. In the end Jon had to preach from the pulpit like rockformation besides the “church”.

Many steps down to the rock formation
It is not quite sure, how many steps it will take you to go down to Jons Chapel. Some say 108 steps, other say 168, others again say 172 or 173 and some have even counted 183 and 188 steps. Try to count yourself!

Hans Rømer - the forests first warden

At the end of the 18th century, hardly any tree was left at the area, that we know as Almindingen forest today. In 1822, the young forest warden Hans Rømer was hired to replant the forest. This day today, you still can see the signs of the huge effort that was made to replant the forest - the tremendous stone walls along the forest, to keep the grassing deer outside of the new plantings.

Sleep in the forest

In Almindingen Forest you are allowed to encamp for free, in the area between Bolsterbjergvej and Åsedamsvej but stick to the rules, which you can find at the Naturstyrelsen website.

A unique collection

The museum displays a unique collection of historical artefacts from the island’s military history ranging from the 17th century to the present day.

A large part of the museum is focused on the history of the local Danish military units, but the museum’s exhibition on the Second World War includes leftovers from the German and Soviet occupations – incl. weapons, uniforms and a German Enigma encryption device (know from such films as ‘The Imitation Game’ and ‘U-571’).

Kastelstårnet - an impressive tower

Near the Museum of Defence, a bit south of the old part of Rønne, you will also find the impressive tower Kastelstårnet with its round shape and its four metre thick walls. This tower looks like the round churches of Bornholm, which were built 4-500 years earlier.
