Experience Allinge and beautiful Bornholm

Hotel Allinge is a family-run hotel with focus on personal presence and service. The hotel offers a beautiful view of the sea and you are close to everything from the harbor, beaches and beach-friendly cliffs to shopping, cafes and the many different restaurants. There is a cozy garden at the hotel, where you have the opportunity to have a refreshing glass of wine in the quiet and relaxing surroundings.

Allinge is located on a rocky coast. A short distance from the hotel is the cozy beach Næs with a sandy beach and cliffs, which many locals use for a morning dip. In the extension of Allinge town is Sandvig town. If you love hiking, it is just over 3 km to Sandkås along the coastal path. This path continues around Bornholm. Hotel Allinge is also within walking distance of the harbor. There are good conditions for a walk towards Sandvig and Hammeren, which i.a. leads past the petroglyphs at Madsebakke.

From Allinge there isn't far to Sandvig, where Hammerknuden starts and offers walks and views that you do not think belong in Denmark. This is also where Hammershus is located. From Hammerhavnen (Sæne Havn) there is an exciting boat trip along the rocky coast to i.a. Wet Oven.

Hammershus is located on the northern part of Bornholm and is worth a historical visit. In connection with Hammershus is the newly built visitor center, where the view of Hammershus and the rocky coast is completely unique.

You can enjoy gourmet food on Bornholm, produced and made from fresh Bornholm ingredients. Enjoy a dining experience at Restaurant Nordlandet, Stammershalle or Vingården Lille Gadegård. You can also buy and maybe taste a little of Bornholm at Kalas Kalas (ice cream), Torvehal Bornholm, Svaneke Bryghus and Krogsholm Frugt.

For more than 100 years it has been one of Allinge's leading hotels. The interior design of the hotel is based on this approach: It must be cozy, present and personal. And that's because it's the attitude of the host couple, Ellen and Thorbjørn, who has been in charge of the hotel since May 2017. Both dreamed of another life and found it in with the old hotel full of possibilities.

The vision that has given the host couple success is to be the personal host of all guests who come to visit. The personal hospitality gives a sense of security and a feeling of being at home. As hosts for Hotel Allinge, they have also worked purposefully to become even better in the green and sustainable area. Hotel Allinge is thus the 5th hotel on the whole of Bornholm and the first on Northern Bornholm to be honored with a Green Key certification.

The hotel offers 55 beautiful rooms in different levels and the atmosphere is cozy and unpretentious. The rooms are neat and bright with standard comfort and private shower and toilet. TV with Danish, Swedish and German channels and chromecast as well as wireless Wi-Fi in all rooms.

During the summer, an evening buffet consisting of salads, appetizers, soup, main course and dessert / cake is served. In winter it will be a 2-course menu that's served according to the chef's choice. It will be mostly be classic Danish food.

    Hammershus

The largest castle ruin in Northern Europe
Experience the largest castle ruin in Northern Europe and the most popular attraction on Bornholm – a place to fire the imagination and bring the history of Bornholm to life. The oldest part of the fortress was probably built in the early 12th century to consolidate control of the island by the Archbishop of Lund (which was then part of Denmark), which he had acquired through a treaty with King Svend III Grathe of Denmark.

Quite new research and excavations from 2015 however seem to prove the fact, that the castle first was ready around the year 1300, and should have been built by Jens Grand – archbishop in Lund from 1289-1302.

For the next 500 years Hammershus was the stronghold of the island’s various rulers. Hammershus was rebuilt and extended on several occasions.

    Hammershus is handed back
Until the mid-15th century, Crown and church fought. Bornholm remained an important pawn in the game, with the king taking Hammershus, and with it control of Bornholm, several times. Every time, though, the island was handed back to the archiepiscopal see, for the last time by King Valdemar IV Atterdag in 1362. This time, however, the bishop recognised the right of the Crown to demand the return of Hammershus when the king so wished. But it was not until 1522 that King Christian II exercised this right and asked for the castle to be handed back.

    Leonora Christina and Corfitz Ulfeldt
In 1660-61 Danish King Christian IV’s daughter, Leonora Christina, and her husband, Corfitz Ulfeldt, were imprisoned in the castle for treason. A dramatic escape down the walls and cliffs failed.

    Hammershus – the old fortress
Hammershus retained its role of defending Bornholm right up until the end of the 17th century, when the defence of Denmark’s easternmost territory passed to the defences on Christiansø and at Rønne. In 1743 Hammershus was finally abandoned as a stronghold and the people of Bornholm were free to gather building materials from the site until 1822, when the ruins were put on the national historic register.

    Hammershus Visitor Center
Experience Hammershus in a new way from the visitor center at Hammershus. From the visitor center you can see Hammershus in a panoramic view. The visitor center also has a fascinating exhibition where you can read the incredible history of the castle ruin. Read more about the visitor center here.

Olsker Round Church was built around 1150

Olsker Round Church was built around 1150, but has been rebuilt and reinforced several times, most recently in the mid-20th century, when the altarpiece was among the things replaced.

Olsker Round Church had originally a flat roof

If you climb the steep stairs, you’ll soon understand why it was impossible for invading enemies to capture the church in Olsker. There are nine foxholes and the top of the wall clearly formed part of the parapet that surrounded the original flat roof of the church.

The round church in Olsker has about 25,000 visitors

The round church in Olsker receives about 25,000 visitors every year. The church is open to visitors when there is no divine service and you can obtain more information from the staff in the church porch. There are public toilets and limited parking.
