    Haderslev Cathedral

    14.3 km

The Cathedral is first and foremost the church of the parish; the framework that winds itself around human life in celebration and joy, pain and mourning. Then, it is the entire city's church; anyone can come here whether they are a member of the parish or not. Finally, the Cathedral is also the church of the entire diocese; the centre of all major events in the diocese.

The Cathedral is not a museum. Like all other churches it is in living use. But is holds a fascinating and eventful history, as well as fine artwork and fixtures.

Queen Margrethe II designed 4 antependiums (altar cloths) as well as 4 matching chasubles. The chasubles can be seen up close in glass cases beneath the choir. They contain central Christian symbols, which shows how extensive the Queen's knowledge is and how anchored she is in the Christian faith.

Everyone is welcome to visit the Cathedral, either to have a quiet moment for thought or to see the many interesting things the Cathedral has to offer.

Tours can be arranged during opening hours. Contact the vergers at +45 73 52 36 45 best between 10am-3pm, or at email: domkirketjener@hado.dk. Photography is allowed in the church for private use, but is not allowed during church functions.

Memorial Chapel for the Schlesinger Regiment. Some Fridays the Schlesinger Music Corps (SMUK) marches to the Cathedral to turn a leaf in their memorial book over fallen soldiers from their regiment. It is a festive feature and should be experienced if you are close by.

Concerts: During the summer there are organ-concerts every Friday afternoon as well as frequent evening concerts.

The Cathedral is closed for visitors during church functions in the opening hours.

The Cathedral is also closed for visitors around the holidays (Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Great Prayer Day, Christ's Ascension, Pentecost, Whit Monday, First day of Christmas and Second day of Christmas).

Until June 2020 there is limited access for the walking impaired, as you need to climb a few steps to enter the church, and a ramp is not yet available.

Haderslev Cathedral is also the starting point for the Camino Haderslev Næs trail that winds through Haderslev and its surrounding areas in 9 stages.

10,000 years at Archaeology Haderslev with new exhibition from dec 2024

The imposing archaeological museum in Haderslev contains some of the best-preserved archaeological finds ever dug up from Southern Jutland soil, including Denmark’s oldest grave, splendid weapon finds from Ejsbøl Bog and remnants of Hansborg Castle (mid-1500s).

The Open Air Museum features historical farms and other buildings from Southern Jutland, a rare post mill and ancient burial sites.

A visit to Haderslev’s archaeological museum takes you back in time, back 10,000 years to the Stone Age grave that is Denmark’s oldest. You can also marvel at opulent Early Bronze Age vessels made of gold, splendid Iron Age weapons, an intricate Viking harness bow – and much more.

Museum Sønderjylland’s archaeology department is responsible for all archaeological digs in this part of Denmark. We normally exhibit our most recent finds at the museum.

    NEW EXHIBITION from 12 Dec 2024 - 12 Dec 2025:

The exhibition Detektor - Fantastic Amateur Finds puts the spotlight on the personal stories and experiences that motivate detectorists in their hunt for treasures of the past.

At Archaeology Haderslev you can meet five dedicated detectorists who share their reflections, adventures and passion for the hobby. Through their stories and selected finds, you'll get a unique insight into the detector work and the special moments that have both touched them and enriched our understanding of history.

You'll also have the opportunity to try your hand at the hobby yourself - choose the nine objects you would take on a detector tour and explore part of the exhibition with a detector in hand. You might even find a gold coin!

    Haderslev Art Association

    13.31 km

Haderslev Kunstforening (Haderslev Art Association) has existed since 1925, and has had a large influence on the townscape in Haderslev. For many years, they have worked hard to get art and sculptures to Haderslev, and their influence can be seen especially in Damparken; in 1961, "Danaide" by Johannes Berg was erected with the help of Ny Carlsbergfonden, and in 1965 "To Drenge" by Jørgen Gudmundsen-Holmgren was purchased by Haderslev Municipality with support from the state art fund. Since then, more artworks have been added, amongst them "Flyvende Sejl" by Helge Holmskov, which is now the logo of the association.

The primary function of the association is, however, the many art exhibitions which today are housed in the old harbour office; here you can experience changing exhibitions with everything from photographs and paintings to ceramics, sculptures, graphics, fabric and yarn by many different artists, both known, local and international. The association also arranges exciting lectures about art and the different exhibitions.

You can see the current exhibitions and events on the website, https://haderslevkunstforening.dk/

Christiansfeld - UNESCO - Visit Christiansfeld, a wonderful history filled city

    18.07 km

Visit the world cultural heritage in Christiansfeld - the atmosphere and history make a visit to Christiansfeld a very special experience.

Christiansfeld is a world heritage site

Since 2015, Christiansfeld has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

"The stamp of quality has been placed on our unique Brethren town. Many people have a stake in the fact that it has succeeded. But when it can happen, it is real, because our then king Christian the 7th gave permission for the Congregation of the Brethren to build the unique town centre. It was the start of what is now a world cultural heritage. I look forward to the fact that both tourists and the rest of Denmark will open their eyes to the very special things that are in Christiansfeld."
    - Jørn Pedersen, former mayor, Kolding Municipality.

Designation of World Heritage sites is based on UNESCO's World Heritage Convention. It aims to preserve the world's unique natural and cultural heritage for future generations.

Christiansfeld is included in the world heritage list as a unique testimony of a very special religious community and its establishment in Denmark. With its right-angled streets and large church located in the absolute center of the town, Christiansfeld was and is completely unique. In addition to being the only town of its kind in Denmark, Christiansfeld is globally the best preserved of all similar towns. The church has an active congregation where some members can even trace their lineage back to the very first who traveled here from Herrnhut in Germany to build Christiansfeld.

Read more about the UNESCO World Heritage Christiansfeld.

    The town center in Christiansfeld
Christiansfeld is special in that it was planned in advance and built according to the same pattern as the first Brødremenigheds town in Herrnhut.. The town thus did not arise gradually like so many other small towns in Denmark. The majority of the historic city center was built from 1773 to 1812. It is today both a living cultural monument - and part of the city and its citizens' everyday life. The center of the town is the beautiful church - Salshuset, around the church you will find the town's most important buildings.

    Europe's best-preserved Brethren town
The Brethren congregation in Christiansfeld is part of a worldwide faith community with congregations in many countries. Christiansfeld is one of several parish towns in Europe built to exactly the same design, but the town is the best preserved of them all. The buildings stand today as they did when the city was founded at the behest of King Christian VII in 1773.

    Visit a different cemetery (Gudsageren)
Gudsageren is the Brethren church's cemetery. As is the tradition in the Church of the Brethren, where the women sit on the right and the men on the left in the hall, women are buried at Gudsageren on the right to the east and the men to the left to the west. Most graves are exactly the same as a symbol that in the congregation everyone is equal, even after death. Since 1774, when Gudsageren was consecrated, no grave has been erased.

    Christinero
Southwest of Christiansfeld is the listed building Christinero, which was built by chamberlain Christina Fridericia von Holstein at the end of the 18th century. The facility is almost a small forest with special plant and tree species. Throughout the year, Christinero is a favorite place for a walking or cycling tour. In the facility there is a cookhouse, a pavilion and a small chapel at the Lord Chamberlain's grave. Furthermore, there are small ponds with naturally occurring artesian springs from which the water sprays up. From Christinero, a path leads to Tyrstrup Old Rectory with the Bullade, which was built in oak in 1668 and is the largest bullade that still stands where it was built. The bulla is protected.

    Gingerbread and tiled stoves
Christiansfeld is also known for its gingerbread and beautiful tiled stoves.

Early in the town's history, both a baker and an oven setter each started their own craft in the town. The gingerbread was not just a success in Christiansfeld but also far outside the city limits. Today it is possible to visit both the Brethren's Gingerbread Bakery (Xocolatl) in the center and the Gingerbread House in the southern part of the city.
