The mill, in its current form, was built around the year 1520 but is believed to originate from the 15th century. For over 500 years, the mill served as a residence for the bailiff and later the district governor, who moved out in 1997. The mill is located on the Mølleåen near the castle. The castle mill was built around the same time as Brundlund Castle and functioned as both a watermill and a defensive structure. When visiting the mill, you can see loopholes in the thick monkstone walls.
In the mid-1900s, the mill underwent extensive renovation, and a small café was also established. On selected weekends - typically during the summer and leading up to Christmas - the café is open to visitors. Here, homemade baked goods such as cakes and bread, baked with the mill's flour, are served. It is also possible to buy samples of the mill's flour. The mill is also available for rental for smaller events.
Today, the mill is owned by the Aabenraa City Historical Society, which also operates the café.
