Tour de France 2021
The world's largest cycling race, the Tour de France, begins in Denmark in 2021. Copenhagen follows in the footsteps of cities like Yorkshire, Rotterdam and Düsseldorf, all having hosted Grand Départ, the official start of the Tour de France, which takes place outside France's borders. In an effort to continue to host world class sporting events in Denmark, the last 2 years have seen a magnificent combined endeavor from members of the royal family, the government and various tourism and sporting bodies in bringing Grand Départ to Denmark.
The Lord Mayor of Copenhagen,Frank Jensen comments: “It is a tremendous honour for Copenhagen to host the Grand Départ of the Tour de France in 2021: The best cycling city in the world welcomes the greatest cycling race in the world. The Grand Depart in 2021 will be the biggest sport event in Denmark ever - we will use this unique opportunity to celebrate Tour de France and our unique bicycle culture with the rest of the world.”
The Grand Départ, on 2nd July, will take place in the cycling-friendly capital featuring a 13 kilometre time trial around Copenhagen, passing through the heart of Copenhagen including landmarks such as the Royal Palace of Amalienborg, the old charming harbour of Nyhavn and the parliament at Christiansborg Palace.
The second stage, on 3rd July, starting in the heart of the historic city of Roskilde, former home of both kings and vikings, will be a 190 kilometre route to the island of Funen, assuring spectacular images across the iconicGreat Belt Bridge in the closing stages.
The third stage on 4th July, will be a 170 kilometre route from Vejle, passing sights such as UNESCO world heritage Jelling Monuments to the finish line in Sønderborg, on the German border.
In total, the competitors of the Tour de France will have cycled around 373 kilometres along beautiful coastlines, through historic cities and across spectacular bridges, traversing the varied landscapes of Denmark, passing major historical and cultural attractions.
