The museum gives you the opportunity to see new sides of Hans Christian Andersen's writing. The focus is not on Andersen the person and his story, but on the fairy tales he wrote and their voice. The museum doesn't talk ABOUT Hans Christian Andersen, it talks AS Hans Christian Andersen. You can listen to the audio guide in Danish, English and German.

The museum building itself covers an area of 5,600 square metres and houses a children's house and an underground museum that intertwines with a surrounding magical garden. The small yellow corner house, formerly known as Hans Christian Andersen's birthplace, is also part of the experience.

The ambitious museum building was designed by Japanese star architect Kengo Kuma and realised with a crucial donation from the A.P. Møller Foundation. Kengo Kuma and his studio are also behind the new Olympic stadium in Tokyo.

The content has been created in collaboration with 12 recognised artists from Denmark and abroad, who together have created an exhibition where architecture, art, design, sound, light and images give you the experience of meeting Andersen through his works. Among the artists are Brazilian installation artist Henrique Oliveira, British puppet maker Andy Gent, award-winning Danish author Kim Fupz and American Daniel Handler - better known by his pen name Lemony Snicket - and more. See all the artists here and read more about their individual contributions.

Access to Hans Christian Andersen's House is only guaranteed with a dated online ticket, which you can buy at hcandersenshus.dk. The ticket gives you access to both Hans Christian Andersen's House and Hans Christian Andersen's Childhood Home on the day of your visit.
