In 2017, Møn and Nyord were named the first Dark Sky Park and Dark Sky Community in the Nordic region, because the light pollution is so low, and the night sky is so clear. A Dark Sky Park aims to protect the darkness of the night from local light pollution, providing the best and clearest view of the starry sky. Being a Dark Sky Community means that there is support from the residents of the area to keep the light pollution as low as possible.
Dark Sky can be experienced all year round, but what you can see varies at different times of the year. In late summer, you can see the Milky Way; in August, you can count shooting stars; and in the fall, you can see the Andromeda Galaxy, which is the Milky Way's neighbor. You can also spend loads of time counting shooting stars in December.
On Møn and Nyord, you can join a Dark Sky guide for a tour to get the full experience of the starry sky. It's also possible to stay at a Dark Sky-certified accommodation. Furthermore, you can visit the Damsholte Observatory, where you can get up close to stars by looking through the binoculars and telescopes that the observatory has.
